An Intimate Evening of Chamber Masterworks

Text / Adam Wright , Ken Smith

Section leaders of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester (the Bayerische Staatsoper's orchestra) have already been primed for some independence in Ariadne auf Naxos, but they will dispense with conductor Patrick Lange altogether when they reunite as the Bayerisches Staatsorchester Ensemble for a programme of chamber music.

While the revered orchestra itself has a 500-year history, its chamber music series has only existed since 1960, and such programmes offer a more intimate way for audiences to experience and appreciate the talents of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester's exceptional string and wind soloists.

Of the infrequently heard masterworks to be performed by these elite members of the orchestra, Carl Nielson's Serenata in vino, a mixed quintet for clarinet, bassoon, horn, cello and double bass from 1914, fits most directly with Strauss' opera from 1916. The ensemble will also be presenting the passionate first movement Quartettsatz from Franz Schubert's intended string quartet No 12 and Schubert's magnificent Octet in F Major.

After the bombast of Ariadne auf Naxos performed by the full Bayerisches Staatsorchester, the chamber music performance by just eight section leaders and principal players promises to provide a perfect contrast and a more up-close-and-personal experience.
